Right. [And he does let himself react a little to that, but only a little. His mouth tightens, thins briefly to a line, brow creasing slightly. Nothing that would necessarily communicate active upset.]

He'd somehow corralled a pack of wild dogs in the CES. In one of the more regularly repeating programs at the time... there were certain unique circumstances a few months ago that allowed that to happen. He tracked two people to the door, quietly stole their weapons, and faked a distress call to send them into the path of the dogs. One survived... the other didn't.

[ Partway through this, she pulls out a notebook and a pencil and starts scribbling. ]

Who were the two people? Are they still here?

They are. He left before he could be identified.

So he wasn't punished.

Who were the two people?

[ She asks this again, wondering if he just overlooked it the first time. ]

[Well, there's no way around this, now. His eyes narrow slightly.]

The one who died was Dean Winchester.

I was the one who survived.

I'm sorry. I thought -

[ No, he heavily implied that it was someone who wasn't him. Which meant he didn't want to talk about it. ]

[He does, actually -- just not in the way she's thinking of. He cuts in quickly.] It doesn't change the facts.

I know. I asked because I wanted to know from the people themselves.

Do you mind - me asking how you know it was him? How you figured it out. I don't doubt you, I just want to know.

I'll admit that the evidence is... circumstantial. His previous warden was a friend of Dean's, and there was a rash of incidents around the same time, all involving friends of hers... [He gives her a look like, hey, probably something you should know anyway.]

He had the means and the opportunity, and he was the only one to whom we could attribute a motive who could have been in all those places at those times. It's not hard evidence, no, but four of us investigated and all came to the same conclusion.

I'll talk to him about it, then. And I'll make sure he can't do that again. And see what I can do about punishment.

[That's certainly more than he expected to get. After the things Sarah had said about punishing Gaius, after what had happened during Toshiko's takeover, the way Felix had been talked down to at every available opporunity about second chances and starting over, he'd been expecting a battle with this, too. Still, he manages not to let his surprise show, and he doesn't let down his guard just yet.]

Can I ask what you mean by that?

Which part? Punishment?

I don't want to hurt him. I don't think that would help. But I think there are ways to make sure he'd think twice before ever doing it again. Things that will bother him a lot more than pain.

[Felix would very much like to see Loki hurt, but he can admit that's not the real point of this: he wants justice more than anything. It's not that he doesn't understand the idea of a second chance. It's not even that there's not a part of him that doesn't want it for himself. It's just... not for nothing. Not without some kind of accountability. He'll never stop fighting for that.]

Again: may I ask?

I was thinking ... I might turn him bright pink. And sparkly. Or blue, like he's supposed to look.

Hurt his pride, I mean. It won't let him look like he's suffering - no one will say it's cruel - but it will hurt him where he's not strong.

[At first, he looks probably exactly like she'd expect him to look: incredulous at best, even offended, entirely ready to protest. Pink? Blue? In exchange for Dean's murder?

But then she says the second part, and he pauses in his rejection. He knows very well what the standard Barge punishment is, and he's never found it to make any sense, much less be effective. There's a part of him that understands he can't ask for too much: even Gaius had once said that blood for blood has to end somewhere. Felix would have been willing to go after Loki if the new warden had ignored him as he'd expected, but... not only is she not, she's getting downright creative with the punishment.

She's going to hit Loki where it hurts. He can get behind that. Besides, now he knows another thing about the so-called god. He clears his throat and nods.]

[ There's a grateful look on her face that she resents, a little, deep down - she's grateful he didn't call her stupid. Grateful he liked the idea. Hating herself for wanting someone else's approval so much. ]

We talked before, about being a warden here, about being uncertain. I think... [He hesitates. He can't say she'll be successful, not with Loki, but...] I think if this doesn't work out, it won't be your fault.

[ She can't help it; in this, she smiles. He might be leading her the wrong way; what he wants is to hurt Loki, not to be a fair warden. But she thinks there's a lot of thoughtfulness in him, and - well, anyway, she can take a compliment. ]

[He can't say that's not a possibility, not if he'd still wanted to go after Loki, but...] Not this time, at least.

[He blinks, looking a little puzzled.] I don't want to be your enemy. [Is that how he comes across?]

I know. But I'm supposed to be on Loki's side, at least a little.

Ah. [And now that does make more sense. His expression settles back into something more neutral.] Of course.
